Microsoft's bundling of Crystal Reports dates to Visual Basic 3 and since then many developers have come to rely on it to build reporting solutions. Early on some developers found the programming API too complicated and there were the typical deployment problems that happen with any product that has many versions and upgrades. There have been many improvements over the years to address developer concerns, but when Business Objects acquired Crystal Decisions a little over a year ago Crystal Reports was revitalized. Developers will see these benefits in Crystal Reports XI and the upcoming release of Visual Studio 2005 (still in beta). I'm going to focus on how Crystal Reports XI affects developers and how it can improve reporting applications. The features that I feel are most important to .NET developers are web reporting, dynamic cascading prompting, faster data co... (more)

Crystal Reports 10 Advanced Developer

Unlike other products that we've reviewed in .NET Developers Journal, Crystal Reports enjoys an almost unique relationship with Microsoft Visual Studio in that a copy of Crystal Reports has shipped with Microsoft Visual Studio since 1993. It's interesting to note that Business Objects and Microsoft have recently announced that this relationship will continue with the inclusion of Crystal Reports into Visual Studio .NET 2005 (Whidbey), which may surprise some considering Microsoft's recent move into the reporting domain with their SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services. One of the greatest things about the version of Crystal Reports provided with Visual Studio is that it is a fully functional product in its own right, providing a solid reporting foundation for the small or independent developer. As your applications demand increased performance, scalability, and securit... (more)

Business Objects' Crystal Reports for WebLogic Workshop

Crystal Reports for BEA WebLogic Workshop integrates Crystal Reports' Java report processing and rendering capabilities with BEA WebLogic Workshop's JavaServer Page (JSP) development environment. It allows you to quickly and simply embed Crystal Reports within JSP applications, minimizing tedious hand coding of dynamic application data presentation. A recent independent study of professional Java developers indicates that nearly 50 percent of Java developers are hand coding the reporting component of their application in JSP, a task that occupies over one-third of their time. Developing reports for custom applications is too often left to the latter stages of a project-an afterthought that contributes to project slippage. Based on a recent study completed by Ensemble Systems ("Integrating Crystal Reports with a J2EE Application: A Case Study"), the hand-coding appro... (more)

OEM Agreement Embeds Crystal Reports

The .NET application environment is being strengthened. Crystal Reports, through an OEM agreement between Business Objects and Borland, will now be embedded in the latest version of Borland's RAD environment for Windows and .NET applications, known as Delphi 2005. The agreement extends Crystal Reports' integration with Borland developer products. Besides Delphi 2005, Crystal Reports is integrated with JBuilder X, and JBuilder 2005. Developers are likely to benefit by even faster application development. Crystal Reports is already the standard embedded reporting application. It cuts the time developers have to spend developing Reports. Before, Reports were fashioned by hand coding. Interactive, presentation-quality Reports, created in developers' preferred IDEs, can now be quickly created, using Delphi or C#. Jim Guthrie, group vice president of ALM products at Borla... (more)
